Meet new AMF Chairman Robert Ophèle


The new AMF Chairman Robert Ophèle will take over the position for the term of five years. What do we know about the new candidate?

26 July, AtoZForex - From August 1, 2017, Robert Ophèle will enter into the position of Chairman of the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF). He is appointed by Decree of the French President for a non-renewable term of five years. Robert Ophèle will replace Gérard Rameix, whose term expires on the 31st of July.

Graduate from ESSEC business school, Robert Ophèle joined the joined the Banque de France in 1981. He has spent three subsequent years in banking supervision. Next, he joined the Monetary Studies and Statistics Directorate as an economist. He was specializing in the interaction between monetary policy and financial market developments.

In between of 1990 and 1991, Robert was a part of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, however, returned to the Banque de France as Head of the Budget Division. Later, he ascended to the position of Director of the Management Control and Budget Directorate, - the position in which he represented the Banque de France on Eurosystem committees.

Moreover, Robert took over the position of Deputy Director General Economics and International Relations in July 2006, where he was responsible for monetary policy and Bank’s collaboration with universities. In June 2009, he became the Director General Operations.

In this role, he overlooked market operations, French payment systems, customer banking services and overall financial stability. Within this time frame, Robert Ophèle took an active part in the work of Chairman of the Paris Robustesse group. He also served as the Chairman of the National SEPA Committee and Market Infrastructure group.

Recent achievements

Since January 6th, 2012, Robert Ophèle took the position of Second Deputy Governor of the Banque de France. Also, he was appointed to represent the Governor as Chairman of the Autorité de contrôle prudentiel et de résolution (French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority – ACPR).

He received a membership of the AMF and of the Supervisory Board of the Caisse des Dépôts. In January 2014, future AMF Chairman became a member of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank’s Single Supervisory Mechanism. Apart from that, Robert Ophèle is a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour.
