Who have been the most important people in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world? In this article, we'll share our list of five tech gurus championing crypto.

October 23, 2020 | AtoZ Markets – It’s been a big year for Bitcoin. After suffering a severe crash back in March around the time the coronavirus pandemic broke out, the digital currency has regained its mojo and trebled in value. This officially makes Bitcoin one of the best performing asset classes in what has been a truly turbulent 2020.

Since stepping down from the day-to-day running of the company that made his name, Microsoft head-honcho Bill Gates has dove headfirst into his philanthropic activities. His new role has seen him endorsing a ton of new innovative technologies that aim to bridge the divide between the industrialized and developing countries. It was only a matter of time until the billionaire philanthropist considered cryptocurrencies as an efficient means to combat poverty.

Gates has argued that digital currencies have the potential to lower transaction costs by as much as 90%, making financial products and services more universally accessible. He also expressed his belief that: “Transforming the underlying economics of financial services through digital currency will help those who live in poverty directly. It will also support a host of other developing activities, including health and agriculture.”

2# Richard Branson - Founder of Virgin Group

Over 50+ years of operating in the higher echelons of business, billionaire Virgin founder Richard Branson has always maintained a keen interest in innovative, entrepreneurial projects. In the last decade alone, Branson has invested his own money in fintech start-ups, ride-sharing apps, and cloud computing. With such a passion for pioneering technologies, it’s no wonder that Branson has become one of Bitcoin’s biggest cheerleaders.

Talking to Bitcoin.com, Branson explained: “Well, I think [Bitcoin] is working. There may be other currencies like it that may be even better. But in the meantime, there’s a big industry around Bitcoin — people have made fortunes off Bitcoin, some have lost money. It is volatile, but people make money off of volatility too.”

Branson has revealed that he owns Bitcoins himself. He also announced Virgin Galactic, the space-flight branch of his empire, will accept payments made by Bitcoin

3# Steve Wozniak - Founder of Apple

It remains an unresolved curiosity for most Apple disciples—what would the late, great Steve Jobs have thought about cryptocurrencies and their role in shaping the future? Thankfully, we at least have the next best opinion, that of Job’s famed Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak.

Speaking at a blockchain convention, the youthful 68-year-old Apple legend explained that Bitcoin caught his attention due to its unusualness: the fact that its creator remains unknown, its decentralized nature, and, most importantly, that it’s a system based on the purity of maths, which is “much better than human beings.”

Wozniak seems to regard Bitcoin with utopian idealism. He’s even compared the rise of Bitcoin to “the internet when it was brand new… I was amazed at the technology behind it.” Not wanting to be left behind, Wozniak has put his money where his mouth is and invested in a blockchain start-up called Equi Capital.

4# Elon Musk - CEO of Tesla & SpaceX

Tech mogul Elon Musk is no stranger to innovating financial technologies. Back in 1999, the young entrepreneur founded X.com, an online bank which later evolved into PayPal. Despite a penchant for creating tech that disrupts the status quo, Musk has remained oddly ambivalent about Bitcoin. He’s even gone as far as saying he’s “neither here nor there on Bitcoin.”

More surprisingly, Musk has revealed he’s a fan of meme-based altcoin Dogecoin, which he supported through a series of Twitter posts. Whether he was being tongued in cheek is anyone’s guess, yet it’s true that Musk is fascinated by the technology powering cryptocurrencies. Speaking about blockchain, Musk called it “quite brilliant” and added that it “bypasses currency controls … Paper money is going away. And crypto is a far better way to transfer values than a piece of paper, that’s for sure." Will we see the release of Muskoin in the future? Millions of Tesla devotees are probably waiting with bated breath.

5# Mark Zuckerberg - CEO of Facebook

Facebook’s chief architect Mark Zuckerberg arguably has more reasons than most to dislike Bitcoin. After all, his frenemies the Winklevoss twins, who won a $65 million settlement from a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, became bona fide billionaires through backing Bitcoin early doors.

Still, as any great tech entrepreneur, Zuckerberg has clearly spotted the unique benefits made possible through blockchain and digital currencies. Zuckerberg explained his belief that “encryption and cryptocurrency […] take power from centralized systems and put it back into people's hands […] I'm interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services.”

On June 18, 2019, Facebook announced its ambition to launch a cryptocurrency of its own, Libra. The digital currency is due to launch in 2021 and is sure to cause a stir.
