Beware of the fake MyEtherWallet app on Android! Thanks to the efforts of careful cryptocurrency community members, the fake MEW app on Google Play has been timely identified.

Lukas Stefanko, a malware researcher, has warned users about the malicious instance of the famous Ethereum wallet that is now being distributed on Google’s official mobile software platform. Mr. Stefanko says once you install the copycat app, it requires you to fill in your private key to log in.

As per the report from Google Play, the malicious MyEtherWallet has appeared on the platform on January 18. The app has been downloaded between 100 and 500 times since then. Fortunately for users, numerous warnings have highlighted the existence of this fake app on Google Play.  A number of users have been stating that the app is targeting to obtain your private keys.

One of the disturbing details about this app is that it appeared to have quite a decent star rating of 3.8 stars. Reportedly, the app also has more than 30 positive reviews about it.

Apple fake MyEtherWallet app got removed

We have previously reported the news about Apple fake MyEtherWallet app. Back in December 2017, an application disguising itself as MEW was released last week, rising to #3 in the Finance category over the weekend. MEW responded to a tweet with “This is NOT US“ and requested it to be taken down. Apple has since removed the application.

The developer of the unofficial application known by the name Nam Le does not seem to have had any connection with cryptocurrency applications until now. Rather he is the creator of games on the AppStore, such as Panda Warrior: Kung Fu Awesomeness, Mr. Beard: IceholeFishermans, and an Apple Watch app called “Wrist Count”.
