After the attack near the London Bridge, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May has commented:

“Violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process.”

The attack comes just days before the UK general elections that take place this Thursday. Straight after the attack, the impact on the UK General Elections was not clear. The authorities appeared concerned about the security issues following London and Manchester attacks. The Manchester Ariana Grande concert explosion killed 22 people and injured more than 50.

Theresa May said that the terrorist attacks were not linked to each other in terms of execution and planning. However, she believes that they were inspired by a “single, evil ideology of Islamist extremism” that represented a perversion of Islam and of the truth.

Despite the tragic events, all parties decided to carry on with their campaigns. As we head into the new working week, Theresa May’s party lead in the election polls has weakened in the recent weeks.

Nevertheless, most of the UK pollsters believe that the UK PM May will take over the most seats in the upcoming election. Some other experts believe that the election date is somewhat close to the date of the official Brexit talks. The talks are about to commence on the 19th of June.

Theresa May has called for the snap election in the attempt to consolidate her stance in the Brexit divorce talks. Moreover, this gives her more time to manage the impact of the exit and to strengthen her position in the Conservative Party. In case May will lose the leading position, her authority might appear undermined both inside the Conservative Party and the divorce talks with European Union officials.
